Arrogance (Takabbur)

Allah Paak Jallah Shanahu says in Surah 7 Al-A’raf (the heights), Verse 146:

“I shall keep those from (comprehending and accepting) My Revelations who are unjustly arrogant in the land. And (even) if they see all Signs they shall not believe in them and (even) if they find the path of guidance they shall not adopt it as (their) way but if they perceive the wrong path, they will embrace it as their way. It is because they denied Our Revelations and remained negligent of them.”

Allah Paak Jallashanahu mentions and condemns arrogance and the one who is arrogant numerous times within the Holy Qur’an.

Allah Paak Jallah Shanahu says in Surah 40 Al-Mu’min (the believer) verse 35:

“Thus does Allah seal up the heart of every arrogant, tyrant. (So they cannot guide themselves to the Right Path). (35).”

And in Surah 16 An-Nahl (the bee) verse 23:

“Surely He does not like the defiers and arrogant.”

The first sin to be done by Iblis was that of Arrogance. When Iblis was commanded to prostrate before Hazrat Adam (Alaiyhi’salaam) he was arrogant and said, ‘I am created of fire and Adam is created of soil, therefore I am superior to him’. It is because of this arrogance and jealousy that Iblis refused and did not prostrate. Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala cursed him, took him out of heaven into the punishment of the hell fire.

Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said, “one who has arrogance equal to even the size of a mustard seed (rye grain) will not enter paradise and one who has Faith (Imaan) equal to the size of a mustard seed will not enter hell”.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (R.A.) narrates that Aaqa kareem (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said that Allah Ta’ala says, “ Pride is my cloth and Greatness is my belt, the one who fights with me for any of these two will be thrown in the hell fire and shall be the least of My concern”.

Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said that, ‘A man is repeatedly proud over himself, even to the extent that he is written in the disbelievers and is given the same punishment as the disbelievers’.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (R.A.) narrates that Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said that, ‘At the time of death, Hazrat Nuh (Noah)(Alaiyhi’salaam) called for his two sons and

made a will. He said, “I command you two things and forbid you two things. I forbid you from Shirk (associating partners with Allah) and Arrogance and I command you La Ilaha Illallah (There is no God but Allah) because if the earth, sky and whatever is in between them is put on one side of the scale and La ilaha illallah (there is no God but Allah) is put on the other side, then La ilaha illallah (there is no God but Allah) will be heavier (in weight). If the earth, sky and whatever is in between them form a circle together and La ilaha illallah (there is no God but Allah) is placed on that circle, then (due to the weight of La ilaha illallah) the circle will break/collapse. The other thing I command you is to recite, “Subhan Allahe wabe hamdehi” because every thing is reciting this, and it is through this that everything gets sustenance (rizq).

Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said, ‘that all those who will enter the hell fire include the bad mannered, ignorant, arrogant, greedy and miserly. Those who will enter paradise include the weak and poor’.

Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said, “On the day of judgement the arrogant will be picked up in the form of a human faced ant, people will squash them under their feet, even the smallest thing will overcome them, then they will be brought in a prison of hell called bolus, the fire of fires (naar ul Anyaar) will be upon them and they will be made to drink ‘Taynul Khabaal’ (the waste of people in hell)

Hazrat Ans (R.A.) narrates that, ‘Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) was the most beloved to the Sahabah-e-Karaam (blessed companions) (Rizwanullah alayhim ajmaeen). No one was more beloved to them than the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam). Inspite of that, when they would see Huzoor (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) they would not stand up because they knew that Huzoor (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) disliked this.

When Huzoor (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) would walk with his Sahabah-e-kraam (Rizwanullah alayhim ajmaeen) (companions), He (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) would command them to walk in front of him and walk in the middle himself. This was to practically give others the teachings of humbleness and piety.

Hazrat Ali (Karam’Allah’Wa’ajhu) says that, ‘If man wishes to see a person of the hell fire, he should see one who is himself seated whilst others in front of him, are standing’.

Hazrat Hassan (R.A.) says that, ‘I am astonished by Ibn e Adam (the children of Adam). They wash impurity with their hands once or twice daily and then try to compete with Jabbaar-ul Samawaat (the Joiner of the Skies).

Hazrat Muhammad bin Hussain Bin Ali (R.A.) narrates that, “if arrogance (takabbur) enters a man’s heart in a small or large quantity, proportionately his wisdom will decrease depending upon the level of arrogance in a person, his wisdom decreases proportionately.

Hazrat Ahnaf bin Qais (Rahmatullah’alaiyhi) said, “I am astonished at the children of Adam who are arrogant

despite the fact that they have passed through an impure place (genitalia) twice”.

Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz (Rahmatullah’alaiyhi) had performed Hajj before he took up the role as Khalifah (khilafat), Hazrat Taw’ous (Rahmatullah’alaiyhi) saw him walking with pride and arrogance, Hazrat Tawous (Rahmatullah’alaiyhi) squeezed him with his finger and said this cannot be the gait of the one who has impurity and stool in his belly, in his intestine.

A very sinful man of Bani Israel was passing near a great worshipper. The worshipper (Abid) was sitting under the shadow of clouds. The sinner thought that if I sit next to the worshipper (Abid) for a little while then may be Allah Ta’ala will have mercy upon me, so he went and sat next to the worshipper (Abid). The worshipper (Abid) thought that I am such a pious person of Bani Israel and this most sinful person has come and sat next to me, he is not worthy of this. Thinking this, the worshipper (Abid) made him get up and told him to go. Allah Ta’ala sent wahi (Revelation) to the Nabi of that time to tell them both, that they both should start practicing (amal) again from zero (a fresh new start).  I have forgiven the sinner and have destroyed the deeds of the worshipper (Abid).

Spiritual diseases including lying, backbiting, jealousy, arrogance and anger, all of which have an effect on the personality of a man directly or indirectly. The one who strives hard to stay away from these, has been guaranteed a house in Paradise, as is mentioned in the following Hadith of Sunan Abu Dawud:

Hazrat Abu Amama (R.A.) narrates that Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said:

‘I guarantee that the one who does not argue even though he is right/truthful, will receive a house in the boundaries of Paradise.
I guarantee that the one who refrains from lying, even in the form of a joke, will get a house in the middle of Paradise.
I guarantee that the one who improves his good behaviour towards others / his etiquettes, will get a house in the highest level of paradise’.

May Allah Paak Jalla Shanahu give us all the power to stay away from arrogance and grant us the wealth of piety and humbleness, Ameen.

May Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala grant us knowledge of Islam and help us to act upon the Islamic knowledge we already have.

  • May Allah Paak  enlighten our hearts with His Noor and grant us the ability to perform good deeds
  • May Allah Paak forgive our major and minor sins and protect us from the spiritual diseases like anger, jealousy, backbiting, pride, greed and arrogance.
  • May Allah Paak protect us from the punishment of the grave & hellfire, and  enlighten our graves with His Noor
  • May Allah Paak shower mercy upon the entire Ummah.

“Wa ma alaiyna illal balaghul mobeen.”
