Friday (Jum’ah) Prayer

Allah Paak Jalla Shanahu says in Surah Al-Jumu'ah 62, Verses 9-11:

O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is proclaimed for the Salat (prayer) on Friday (Jumu'ah prayer), come to the remembrance of Allah [Jumu'ah religious talk (Khutbah) and Salat (prayer)] and leave off business (and every other thing), that is better for you if you did but know! (9) Then when the (Jumu'ah) Salat (prayer) is ended, you may disperse through the land, and seek the Bounty of Allah (by working, etc.), and remember Allah much, that you may be successful (10) And when they see some merchandise or some amusement [beating of Tambur (drum) etc.] they disperse headlong to it, and leave you (Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) standing [while delivering Jumu'ah's religious talk (Khutbah)]. Say "That which Allah has, is better than any amusement or merchandise! And Allah is the Best of providers." (11)

I will talk about Jum’ah prayer today.

Every Muslim should prepare for Jum'ah from Thursday. After Asr on Thursday one should increasingly read Istaghfaar etc. That person shall obtain the most benefit of Jum'ah who awaits it and prepares for it from Thursday.

The Beloved Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said: Recite Darood on the day of Friday and the Friday night (the night between Thursday and Friday) excessively because whosoever does that, I shall stand witness to him and would be his advocate on the day of judgment. (Jameh Sagheer)

Rasul’Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) has said: “The best day of the week that the sun rises on, is the day of Jum'ah."

Amongst the seven days of the week, Friday is the day when Allah’s Special mercies are granted. It is a day of gathering for the Muslims. The night of Jum'ah (the night between Thursday and Friday) is more blessed and the day of Jum'ah is the most blessed. Friday is the most excellent and distinguished day among the days of the week.

      • Friday is an Eid for the Believers.
      • Hazrat Adam (Alaiyhi’salaam) was created on Friday.
      • He was granted entrance into Jannah on Friday.
      • He was sent to the Earth on Friday.
      • He died on Friday.
      • There is a blessed time on Friday during which a person is granted by Allah ta’ala anything lawful and good, he prays for.
      • Resurrection will also take place on Friday.

Hazrat Abu Saeed khudri (R.A.) says that Rasul’Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) has said that: “Whoever recites Surat-ul-Kahf on Friday enjoys the illumination between two Fridays." (Nasai)

Hazrat Abdullah Bin Umar (R.A.) narrates that Rasul’Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) has said that: “Whoever recites Suratul-Kahf on Friday, will enjoy a light shining from his feet to the heaven and will have his sins forgiven committed between the two Fridays."
(Ibn Marduya).

It has been reported by Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A.) that Rasul’Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) has said that: " Whoever recites Suratul-Ham-Mim Dukhan on Friday enjoys the prayer of 70,000 angels for his forgiveness and gets all sins forgiven."
(Tirmizi).

Hazrat Abdulla Bin Abbas (R.A.) narrates that Rasulallah (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) has said that: “Whoever recites Surat-ul-Aale Imran on Friday, angels enjoy the divine shower of salutation on him till sunset."
(Tibrani).

Al Isbahaani reports from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (R.A.) that Rasul’Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said: " The one who performs two raka'at after Maghrib on Friday night (the night between Thursday and Friday) and reads in every rakaat once Suratul-Al Fatiha and Suratul Zilzaal (Iza zul zilatil Ardhu) fifteen times, Allah will ease for him the Sakaraat of Death (the moment of death) and will save him from the punishment of the grave and make easy for him the crossing of the bridge of Siraat.

Ghusl (washing the whole body), cleaning the teeth, applying perfume & hair oil, coming to the Prayer as early as possible & remaining silent while the Imaam gives the khutbah (sermon) are some important things to do on Friday. Hazrat Abdullaah bin 'Umar (R.A.) narrates that the beloved Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said, "Any one of you attending the Friday Prayer should take ghusl.” (Bukhari)

Hazrat Abu Sa 'eed al-Khudri (R.A.) narrates that the beloved Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said, "The ghusl on Friday is incumbent on every male adult, and also the cleaning of his teeth, and the use of perfume if it is available.”
(Bukhari)

Hazrat Abu Amama (R.A.) says that the Rasul’Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) has said that: "The bath of Friday, pull out every sin of the man from its root.
(Tibrani)

Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (R.A.) narrated that Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said, "Anyone who takes ghusl on Friday like the ghusl of Janaabah, and then goes for the prayer (in the first hour), it is as if he had sacrificed a camel (in Allah's cause); one who goes in the second hour, it is as if he had sacrificed a cow; one who goes in the third hour, it is as if he had sacrificed a horned ram; one who goes in the fourth hour, it is as if he had sacrificed a hen; and one who goes in the fifth hour, it is as if he had offered an egg. When the Imaam comes out, the angels settle down, listening to the remembrance.”
(Bukhari, Muslim)

Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A.) says that Rasul’Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) has said that : " whoever goes out for Friday prayer after making proper ablution and listen to the sermon quietly sitting, get all his sins forgiven not only from one Friday to the next, but also the sins of three days more."
(Muslim)

Hazrat Abdullah Bin Masud (R.A.) reports that Rasul’Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) has said: “The order of sitting before Allah will be just as order of attendance on Friday. Whoever comes first in mosque on Friday will have his seat nearest to Allah, the second one will have the second seat and third one will have the third seat and fourth one will also not be very far from Allah."
(Ibn Maaja)

Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (R.A.) narrated that the beloved Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said, "When the Imaam is delivering the Khutbah, and you ask your companion to keep quiet and listen, then no doubt you have spoken wrongly. "
(Bukhari)

Narrated by Hazrat Tariq ibn Shihab (R.A.), the beloved Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said: The Friday prayer in congregation is a necessary duty for every Muslim, with four exceptions; a slave, a woman, a (young) boy, and a sick person.
(Abu Dawud)

Hazrat Hafsah Ummul Mu'minin (R.A.) narrates that Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said: It is necessary for every adult (person) to go for (saying) Friday (prayer), and for everyone who goes for Friday (prayer), washing is necessary. (Abu Dawud)

Hazrat Al-Ja'd ad-Damri (R.A.) narrates that the beloved Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said: He who leaves the Friday prayer (continuously) for three Friday on account of slackness, Allah will print a stamp on his heart.(Abu Dawud)

Narrated by Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (R.A.), Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said, "When it is a Friday, the angels stand at the gate of the mosque and keep on writing the names of the persons coming to the mosque in succession according to their arrivals. The example of the one who enters the mosque in the earliest hour is that of one offering a camel (in sacrifice). The one coming next is like one offering a cow and then a ram and then a chicken and then an egg respectively. When the Imam comes out (for Jumua prayer) they (i.e. angels) fold their papers and listen to the Khutba."
(Sahih Bukhari)

Narrated by Hazrat Anas ibn Malik (R.A.), Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) prohibited to sit on hips by erecting feet, sticking them to the stomach and holding them with hands on Friday while the imam is delivering the sermon. (Abu Dawud)
Narrated by Hazrat Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As (R.A.), Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said: Three types of people attend Friday prayer; One is present in a lighthearted way and that is all he gets from it; another comes with a supplication, Allah may grant or refuse his request as He wishes; another is present silently and quietly without stepping over a Muslim or annoying anyone, and that is an compensation for his sins till the next Friday and three days more, the reason being that Allah, the Exalted, says: "He who does a good deed will have ten times as much"
(Abu Dawud)

Hazrat Jabir ibn Abdullah (R.A.) narrates that Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said: Friday is divided into twelve hours. Amongst them there is an hour in which a Muslim does not ask Allah for anything but He gives it to him. So seek it in the last hour after the afternoon prayer.
(Abu Dawud)

Hazrat Yahyaa (R.A.) narrated from Hazrat Maalik (R.A.) that Hazrat Uthmaan bin 'Affaan (R.A.) used to say the following in khutbahs, and he would seldom omit it if he was giving the khutbah: "When the Imaam stands delivering the khutbah on the day of Jum'ah, listen and pay attention, for there is the same reward for someone who pays attention but cannot hear as for someone who pays attention and hears. And when the iqaamah of the prayer is called, straighten your rows and make your shoulders adjacent to each other, because the straightening of the rows is part of the completion of the prayer. "

Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said: “The Friday prayer is obligatory on every person who believes in Allah and last day; the one who ignores it on account of sport or fun, or trade and business, will be ignored by Allah, Who is Pure and Self-sufficent.”
( Daraqutni )

Aaqa Kareem (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Aalihi wa Sallam) said: “People are warned against neglecting Friday prayer, otherwise Allah will seal their hearts and they will be condemned to negligence (forever).”
(Muslim)
You have heard Allah’s command in the start of my speech. Allah has ordered you all to stop working when Jumma time starts. Despite of this, the person who prefers work, business or earning money is doing so against Allah’s will and command. How can he expect blessings (barakah) in his earnings? But people don’t think. It’s never too late. Start thinking now about your attitude and preferences in your life. You should give first preference to Allah Paak Jalla Shanahu’s will and command if you want to succeed in this world and the hereafter. My Beloved Allah is always waiting for you. Come back! Come back to Allah Subhana’wa’ta’ala.

      • May Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala grant us knowledge of Islam and help us to act upon the Islamic knowledge we already have.
      • May Allah Paak Jalla Shanahu enlighten our hearts with His Noor and grant us the ability to perform good deeds.
      • May Allah Paak Jalla Shanahu forgive our major and minor sins and protect us from the spiritual diseases like anger, jealousy, backbiting, pride and greed.
      • May Allah Paak Jalla Shanahu protect us from the punishment of the grave & hellfire, and enlighten our graves with His Noor.
      • May Allah Paak Jalla Shanahu mercy upon the entire Ummah.
Wa ma alaiyna illal balaghul mobeen.
