Lover or Beloved?

Once Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) asked Ghaus-e-Paak- Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani (Radi’Allah’Ta’ala’hu’anhu): “Would you like to be the ‘beloved’ or the ‘lover’?” Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) gave him twenty four hours to answer this question.

In the meantime Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani (Radi’ Allah’Ta’alahu’anhu) was very anxious and worried as to how to respond. He heard a voice: “On the one hand you have worshipped and achieved so many high ranks, but inspite of that you are finding it so difficult to answer such a simple question?” Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani (Radi’ Allah’ Ta’alahu’anhu) turned his head towards the voice. He saw a ‘Faqeer’ wearing torn old rags standing outside an old shop with a fire ignited. Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani (Radi’Allah’Ta’alahu’anhu) was most surprised as to how this man came to know of something confidential between Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) and himself. At that point he understood that this ‘Faqeer’ is surely a Friend of Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala). The ‘Faqeer’ offered to help Ghaus-e-Paak (Radi’Allah’Ta’ala’hu’anhu) in making a decision for his answer and asked him to visit him the following day at 12 am midnight.

The next day Ghaus-e-Paak (Radi’Allah’Ta’alahu’anhu) arrived at the place, however the Faqeer was not there. Ghaus-e-Paak (Radi’Allah’ta’alahu anhu) enquired from the local residents as to the whereabouts of the Faqeer. Much to Hazrat Ghaus-e-Paak (Radi’Allah’ Ta’alahu’ anhu)’s surprise, people informed him that the ‘Faqeer’ was a criminal, had committed numerous crimes including murders, and had been arrested today, had been placed on a donkey and taken around the town for humiliation, then was hanged and his body was cut into pieces and discarded in a dumping place for crows and vultures to feed on- so that people may learn a moral lesson. Hazrat Ghaus-e-Paak (Radi’Allah’Ta’alahu anhu) was very surprised to hear this.

Hazrat Ghaus-e-Paak (Radi’Allah’Ta’alahu’anhu) went to where the pieces of the Faqeer’s body were discarded. As he walked closer, the pieces began to move, until they came together causing the crows and vultures to fly away, and the ‘Faqeer’ sat up in his original form. As he sat up he chanted: “Now have you seen the outcome of true love? During my entire life I was made to beg, was taken on a donkey around the market, was made to be abused by people, given the name of a criminal and rascal and caused to hang, and my body was made to be torn to pieces and thrown in the dump! You possess a very delicate nature, how will you ever be able to endure such extreme malicious torment, just how?”

Being the beloved of the Almighty is a very delicate matter. How can one be bold enough and worthy enough to ask to be the beloved of Almighty Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala)?

Therefore, it is wise not to desire to be the lover nor the beloved. The best thing is to request Almighty Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) to choose whatever He wishes for oneself and then accept whatever that may be. Say to Allah: “O Allah You are the Lord, it is Your choice, whatever You choose I will accept, I am incapable of asking for myself.” He chanted this phrase and retired to the ground. His body fell apart into pieces again.

Hazrat Ghaus-e-Paak (Radi’Allah’Ta’ala’hu’anhu) collected the pieces of his body in his shawl (chador) and brought them to his sanctuary (khanqaa). He gave the pieces ritual bath (Ghusl) with own hands and offered the funeral prayer (Namaaz-e-Janaazah). He then buried the pieces in his sanctuary.

Hadhrat Ghaus-e-Paak (Radi’Allah’Ta’ala’hu’anhu) ordered, after burial: “Whosoever wishes to visit me, must visit the shrine (mazaar) of this blessed ‘Faqeer’ first and recite the ‘Fatihah’, then he may come to me. The same should be performed upon one’s departure from the shrine. This practice still holds firm to this present day.
