What is ‘Shirk’

Allah Ta’ala states in the holy Qur’an:

“O Messenger…..The people who do bayt with you in reality do bayt with Allah, Allah’s hand is above their hands”.

In this Huzoor (Sallallahu’ alaiyhi’ wa alayhi’ wasallam)’s bayt is Allah’s bayt and Huzoor (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wa alayhi’wasallam)‘s hand is described as Allah’s hand. Huzoor (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wa alayhi’ wasallam) is the apparent form of the hidden. The holy Ka’aba is also a sign of Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala), and Hajar-e-Aswad (the black stone) has been described as Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala)’s hand according to a Hadith.

However Haqeeqat-e-Muhammadi (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’ wa alayhi’wasallam) is much more superior to Haqeeqat-e-Ka’aba. A person is the physical manifestation of the divine attributes of Allah. It is not shirk to touch or kiss the gold fence of the Roza-e-Aqdas. Even claiming that Huzoor (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wa alayhi’wasallam) knows what is in our hearts is not shirk. Allah Ta’ala is so great, it cannot be comprehended due to our limited intellectual capacities. When people come to know of the supernatural powers of someone, people start to recall him as a religious person and respect him, this is not shirk. Hadhrat Ghaus-e-Paak (Radi’Allah’Ta’alahu’anhu) looks at the world as one looks at the palm of his hand. Surely, such powers are bestowed by Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) upon the chosen His chosen friends. Sayyedina Ghaus-e-Paak (Radi’Allah’Ta’ alahu’ anhu) says that “The Ghaus is one who observes every single atom of the universe in the span between his two fingers”. Subhan’Allah.

It is mentioned in a Hadith that there is no house in which the Angel of Death, Hadhrat Israeel (Alaiyhi’salaam) does not look at five times daily, and he knows each resident of every house very well indeed. Hazrat Mikaeel (Alayhi’ salaam) is responsible for imparting livelihood (rizq) to the whole universe. He knows, observes and recognises all beings of the universe, including humans, jinn, animals and species of the Plant kingdom. So is he equal to Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) on the basis of these attributes? No, in fact he is a servant of Allah to whom Allah has bestowed special attributes. The Righteous of mankind are of a much greater status. A righteous believer is the vicegerent (‘khalifah’, ‘naib’) of Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala). Respecting such a person does not constitute shirk, as the respect and honour bestowed on him is due to Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala).

People do not prostrate ‘to’ the Ka’aba, but they prostrate ‘towards’ the Ka’aba, as Allah Ta’ala has declared the holy Ka’aba as His sign and has commanded mankind to prostrate in this direction. There is a Hadith, ‘Kissing the Black stone is like kissing the hand of Allah Ta’ala’.

When Huzoor (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wa alayhi’wasallam) said about Hadhrat Ali Karam’Allahu’wa’ajhu: “Your flesh is my flesh, your blood is my blood”. Then Hadhrat Ali Karam’Allahu’wa’ajhu went into a state of spiritual ecstasy and fell onto the blessed feet of Huzoor (Sallallahu’ alaiyhi’wa alayhi’wasallam) and started to kiss them.

It is impossible to understand such things, until ‘Sharah-saddar’ is achieved. The Companions of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wa alayhi’wasallam) asked the Beloved Prophet (Sallallahu’ alaiyhi’ wa alayhi’ wasallam), “What is Sharah saddar” Huzoor (Sallallahu’ alaiyhi’ waalayhi’ wasallam) replied, “Sharah sadder is a noor which Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) places in the chest of a person”. To understand the reality of Tawhid, spiritual training and zikr are necessary. If someone says that first of all, I will find the reality, then I will undertake training; such a person can be likened to a patient who says that, ‘first I will be cured, and then after I shall take medication as a cure for my illness’.
