The Tests and Trials of Ishq-e-Ilahi (Love for Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala)

When a person claims that he is a Lover (Aashiq) of Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala), he must be content on receipt of both the wrath and pleasure of Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala), as he will be subject to endure both.

This can be illustrated by the events in the life of Hazrat Musa (Alayhi’salaam).Hadrat Musa (Alayhi’salaam) was first left in a river, then captured by enemies, after this a man was murdered by him- only after these experiences was he granted Prophethood.

To be placed into trials is not something to be complained about; in fact one should be thankful for this.

There are numerous blessings in going through problems and difficult times, if one upholds the correct attitude, and a heart full of patience, forbearance and gratitude. By undergoing these tests- one becomes stronger, mature and more robust than ever before. Indeed, the qualities which are concealed within us are revealed during hardship, which is an advantage of being in trials.

It has been narrated in a Hadith:

One day someone said in front of Huzoor (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wa alayhi’wasallam). “So and so is very wealthy, he has wives, kids, camels, sheep and goats, and on top of this he has never fallen ill. Then Huzoor (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wa alayhi’wasallam) said: “Stay well away from his company, as his faith is weak.”

Remember that Friends of Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) must undergo three forms of tests; these may occur individually or simultaneously:

1) ‘Illat’.
2) ‘Killat’.
3) ‘Zillat’.

Hazrat Ghaus-e-Azam (Radi’Allah’Ta’alahu’anhu) said:

“Patience during hard times is what the feeble, women and the eunuch do, real men are always in a state of gratitude.”

The Messengers and Prophets and friends of Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) are subject to be tested rigorously by Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) in proportion to their level of faith in order to test their love and sincerity.

Extreme love (Ishq) is a very demanding state and matter and entails extreme hardships and sacrifices with regards to one’s life and soul. Thus if one seeks to follow this path, one must think very carefully and be mentally prepared.

For instance, Hadhrat Ibrahim (Alayhi’salaam) was an extreme Lover of Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala). So He (Alayhi’salaam) was tested vigorously. He achieved success in every test. He was thrown in fire, had to leave his wife, kids and country, was given the command to sacrifice his beloved son with his very own hands. This was certainly not a simple test. When Allah Ta’ala makes someone His own, he does not let him become anyone else’s. When He (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) saw that when he became distracted and overwhelmed by love for his son, he was commanded to sacrifice this very same son.

Similarly, Allah Ta’ala noticed that Hadhrat Yaqoob (Alayhi’salaam) loved his son very much, so made Hadhrat Yusuf (Alayhi’salaam) thrown into a well and imprisoned. In this way the father was made to be separated from his son. When a person loves something other than Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala), then Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala)’s sense of honour and pride comes into action. Like the Holy Prophets (Alaiyhi’salaam), Friends of Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) are also being tested. Whoever claims and declares his true love for Almighty Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) must be well prepared to undergo three types of trials which as has been mentioned previously are meant for tests of sincerity:

Remember that Friends of Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) must undergo three forms of tests:

1) ‘Illat’- tests related to financial issues- such as the experiencing of financial constraints, insecurity and difficulties.
2) ‘Killat’- tests related to ones health, separation from loved ones, or being cheated on, deceived, let down or hurt by others.
3) ‘Zillat’- Being the recipient of injustice or false accusations.

These may take place one after another (in any order) or even simultaneously at any point in one’s life. Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) says in the Holy Qur’an:

“Assuredly ye will be tried in your property and in your persons, and ye will hear much wrong from those who were given the Scripture before you, and from the idolaters. But if ye persevere and ward off evil, then that is of the steadfast heart of things.” (Surah Al-Imran: 186)

Huzoor (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wa alayhi’wasallam) was tested the most, who was formed first of all by the divine light of Allah (noor), and is the reason for which the Universe was created. He (Sallallahu’ alaiyhi’ wa alayhi’ wasallam) was made to become an orphan in his childhood, had to bear the taunts, abuse by people. He (Sallallahu’ alaiyhi’wa alayhi’wasallam) was tortured physically, was wrongly accused, and on many occasions his body would become full of blood. He was trapped in a valley for three years with his beloved wife Hadhrat Khadijah-tul-Kubra (Radi’Allah’Ta’alahu’anha). He (Sallallahu’ alaiyhi’ wa alayhi’ wasallam) had to tolerate hunger, leave His (Sallallahu’ alaiyhi’ wa alayhi’ wasallam) home and relatives, and had to migrate. This was inflicted by none others but His (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wa alayhi’ wasallam) very own relatives, had to tolerate the false accusation and grief about Hadhrat Aisha Siddiqah (Radi’ Allah’ Ta’ alahu’ anha), had to bury His (Sallallahu’ alaiyhi’ wa alayhi’wasallam) two sons with His (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wa alayhi’wasallam) own hands. In Holy wars (ghazwas) He (Sallallahu’alaiyhi’wa alayhi’ wasallam) stayed hungry and was wounded. Has was tested with illness, was effected by magic, had to tolerate the conspiracies of hypocrites, was given poison and attempted to be murdered on many occasions. All these rigorous tests fell upon the very figure that Allah Himself and the angels send peace, blessings and salutations (durood) upon. This is certainly a point worth pondering upon.

Whoever makes the claim of extreme love for Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala) will have to undergo rigorous tests and hurdles. This is the principle of Allah (Subhana Wa Ta’ala). If one is patient and tolerant on these tests, he attains a higher spiritual status. However, if one shows gratitude, he attains the best status. The friends of Allah are happy on receipt of each test, as their Friend has sent a gift- Thank you, Allah!
